Chinese Government Condemns United States of ‘Hypocritical Policies’ Regarding Trade Levy Warning

Donald Trump’s most recent warning to introduce an further 100% tariff on items imported from China has been called a “prime illustration” of United States’ contradictory behavior, according to the China’s leadership.

A representative of the ministry also stated that Beijing could enact its own undisclosed “countermeasures” if the American leader carries out his pledge, adding that the country was “not afraid” of a looming trade conflict.

This past Friday, the former president responded at the Chinese government’s action to strengthen its regulations for exports of critical elements, charging China of “adopting a confrontational stance” and attempting to hold the global community “under its control”.

Furthermore, he threatened to withdraw from a scheduled summit with China’s President Xi, which was expected to take place during a summit in South Korea before the month ends.

The former president’s remarks on Friday rattled financial markets, with the S&P 500 share index falling by 2.7%, marking its steepest fall since last spring.

The president’s words renewed apprehensions of a trade war between the US and China.

This past spring, the respective governments had agreed to drop high import duties on each other’s imports, which had created the possibility of commerce ceasing between the economic powers.

Consequently, American import duties on products from China facing an extra import tax compared with the beginning of 2025, while American products entering the Chinese market face a 10% tariff.

Beijing’s recent statements – published by the relevant government department in the form of official answers to press queries – mirrored terminology from the height of the ongoing trade dispute.

Officials denounced United States controls on chips and semi-conductors while defending China’s own restrictions on exports on rare earths as “standard procedures” to protect national security and that of every country.

The official stated that for “an extended period”, the US had “overstretched the concept of state security, exploited export control measures and “adopted discriminatory practices against Beijing.

“Resorting to trade levy ultimatums is not the right way to interact with Beijing,” the spokesperson said.

“China’s position on a import duty dispute has consistently been consistent: we are not seeking one, but we are not afraid of one.”

The previous week, China declared it was reinforcing export controls on key elements and additional substances critical for cutting-edge industry.

This move was regarded as a key move, as the country handles about 90% of the global rare earth supply, which are used in products such as photovoltaic modules and handheld devices.

Latest statements from Washington and Beijing are being seen by analysts as a method of bolstering negotiating stances ahead of forthcoming discussions.

It is unclear whether a summit between the former president and China’s leader, scheduled at a conference in Seoul in the coming weeks, will take place as planned.
