The team Vets Over 35s are based in south Manchester and compete in the Cheshire-based Veterans Division Premier Tier.

Their squad list this campaign boasts 9 ex- top-flight footballers, with a collective over 1,800 top-flight games.

They include one forward, who scored thirty-seven goals in 117 games for his former club after moving to them for nine million pounds from Bundesliga club Freiburg in January 2012.

"I warn my defender 'I'm not hanging back' and that I'm just going to continue running.

"The running is what I'm after. It's enjoyable."

Along with the forward's 6 scores on debut, Ireland has netted eight in three appearances for Wythenshawe, while George Boyd hit five on his first appearance and Lescott, a defender by trade, notched a hat-trick in one match up front.

Wythenshawe are leading of the Top Division with three victories from 3 and a GD of plus nineteen.

Paul Barrow, 38, who features on the flank for Collegiate OB, faced ex- Latics defender Maynor Figueroa on the weekend - and had to explain his young boy who Emile Heskey was.

"I think I was a bit starstruck playing against him to be honest.

"We really have not ceased talking about it - I was calling my mother and brother on the way home.

"They were all really nice, shaking our hands after the game - it was like facing a bunch of regular fellas.

"Now we are eager for the return fixture."
