Conservative reactions to the partial disclosure of files involving the Jeffrey Epstein case have been sharply divided, with certain supporters of the former Trump administration pointing out the prominent presence of Bill Clinton and additional Democratic figures in photographs, while others expressed frustration over how extensive redactions cast Donald Trump and Republicans in a unfavorable light.
Justice Department Justifies Censorship with Strong Hyperbole
Justice Department officials defended the heavily censored sections with fervent hyperbole. “At no point in American the nation's history has a President or the Department of Justice been so open with the American people about such a sensitive law enforcement matter,” stated Deputy Attorney General Todd Blanche, who issued a six-page letter describing the redaction procedure.
Questions Raised by Redactions
While Trump's name and likeness appear in some of the documents, the widespread redactions prompt serious concerns about what may be concealed behind them. Some conservative lawmakers swiftly demanded greater transparency.
“People are furious and disengaging,” wrote Republican Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene.
In a online statement, Republican Congressman Thomas Massie asserted the censorship violate the law, and suggested that a future Congress may attempt to remove the Attorney General, Pam Bondi, for that offense. “Unfortunately, this document release egregiously does not adhere to both the spirit and the wording of the law,” he continued.
Some Rightwing Commentators Swing In Support of the Release
However, some conservative pundits and Trump allies came out strongly in support of the Justice Department's actions.
The release—originating from a DOJ run by close Trump associate Pam Bondi—contains scores of documents that are completely censored, and numerous of the men depicted in photographs have their identities blacked out.
But a few do not, featuring high-profile figures like Bill Clinton, entertainer Michael Jackson, and scholar Noam Chomsky. The presence of Clinton, especially, enabled certain conservative figures to go on the attack.
“This is pretty ironic how the political left wrongly accused President Trump of associating with a pedophile, only for the Trump DOJ to unveil documents that show Bill Clinton swimming nude with a pedophile,” wrote conservative commentator Laura Loomer.
“New Epstein Files show Bill Clinton without a shirt in a jacuzzi with a female that is other than his spouse Hillary Clinton,” wrote lawyer Rogan O’Handley. “There’s only one explanation Epstein would take pictures of a US President with a young woman in a hot tub: Blackmail.”
Former President Spokesperson Issues Response
Clinton has repeatedly stated he was aware of zero criminal activity by Epstein and has never been accused to have participated in any wrongdoing. “The White House hasn’t been concealing these files for months only to release them late on a Friday to protect Bill Clinton,” Clinton’s representative Angel Ureña said in a statement.
“This is about protecting themselves from what comes next, or from what they’ll try and conceal forever. Therefore they can publicize as many low-quality decades-old photos as they desire, but this is not about Bill Clinton. Never has, never will be,” the statement concluded.
Broader Conservative Comment Seems Muted
However, overall comment on the right was relatively muted following the release, especially when compared with the vociferous demands for action that preceded the legislative vote to enact a bill requiring the files' release.
Loomer, who recently accepted press credentials at the Defense Department, had been one of the most vocal proponents for a full release. Earlier this year, she criticized the Justice Department generally and Bondi in particular after a group of conservative personalities were given physical binders of files that contained little new data.
