White House Reveals Government Employee Layoffs as Shutdown Approaches Third Week

The White House confirmed the initiation of government employee terminations on the end of the week, following through on earlier warnings linked to the continuing federal funding lapse, which is now poised to stretch into its third consecutive week.

Formal Statement and Initial Details

Russell Vought posted on a public platform that “reductions in force have begun,” indicating the government’s process for terminating staff.

Although Vought provided no details on which agencies were impacted, a treasury spokesperson stated that layoff warnings had been distributed within that department. Additionally, a Department of Homeland Security spokesperson noted that staff reductions would also occur at the CISA. Moreover, a labor organization representing federal workers confirmed that members at the Department of Education would be affected by the staff cuts.

Union Response and Legal Challenges

Labor representatives cautions that the layoffs would have “devastating effects” on services used by the public and pledged to contest the actions in the legal system.
